About RCIA

The Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults (RCIA) is the process through which Catholic parishes welcome new members. Participants attend classes to learn about the Catholic faith and spend time discerning whether God is calling them to the Catholic Church. The process culminates with the reception of the Sacraments of Initiation (Baptism, Confirmation, and Eucharist) on Holy Saturday (the evening before Easter Sunday)

The RCIA is designed primarily for two types of individuals: (1) Unbaptized persons who are seeking Baptism and membership in the Catholic Church; and (2) Baptized Christians who are seeking to become members of the Catholic Church. The RCIA can also be used for individuals who were baptized Catholic, but have not received the other sacraments of initiation.

Unbaptized individuals will be baptized, and receive Confirmation and First Eucharist during the Easter Vigil Mass. Baptized Christians, regardless of in which church they were baptized so long as their baptism was in the name of the Trinity (Father, Son, and Holy Spirit), are not re-baptized. Instead, these individuals make a profession of faith in the Catholic Church and receive Confirmation and First Eucharist during the Easter Vigil.

At Mary Queen of Peace, the RCIA process takes approximately nine months. Click on the Schedule tab above for a detailed schedule of the classes and other special events.

If you are interested in becoming Catholic or just learning about the Catholic faith, please consider attending the RCIA classes. We are here to help you on your faith journey in whatever way we can, and there is never any pressure or obligation to join the Church at the end of the process--although we hope that you will find a spiritual home with us.
